After meeting a Veteran in town with the Pilgrim Riders, Ken (Legion President) found out about a new challenge for our program. We have had success with veterans with mobility issues, Veterans with no use of or have lost their legs have a great ability to Kayak. After meeting Mike we had a new challenge as he has no use from the waist down, creating an issue of control of the upper body while in the Kayak.
Ken jumped on the case, gathered together the materials and with the help of some local folks with the sewing and such...came up with a rig that we hope will allow those Vets with no use of legs and hips to be able to get out on our fantastic lakes. The finished product is in in, and we hope soon Mike will be in town to help us try it out. In the interim Ken offered up himself to test things out. Taking it out on Pyramid Lake, and doing the safety test with a nice cold roll. The new system worked great providing control of the upper body, while being easily detachable for entry and exit. In the safety test Ken (not using hips or legs) was easily able to extract himself from an upturned Kayak, the rig itself being buoyant and removable while in the water. Thanks Sue for supervising his dunking! Thanks Ken for helping out with your design and assistance with getting more of our Vets back out into the outdoors. If you are interested in our program, we can be found on the services/about us page as well as on facebook Veterans Adventures Jasper. We can also be contacted thru the Jasper Legion.
